Second Carpenter – Full Time Seasonal Position

ABOUT THE GRAND THEATRE

A leading cultural hub, the Grand is proudly located in the heart of downtown London, Ontario. We are a place for all to gather, discuss, challenge, debate, celebrate, and be inspired and entertained by exceptional theatre experiences.  A not-for-profit regional theatre, the Grand produces and presents professional theatre on two stages: the Spriet Stage (~800 seats) and the Auburn Stage (~150 seats).

A typical season at the Grand runs from September to May including an annual fall High School Project production, which has a 23-year history as an integral part of our programming.

And we bring London to the world stage with a commitment to developing, producing, and premiering new and original stories through COMPASS, our new play development program. In partnership with artists and playwrights from around the world and around the corner, we present relevant, provocative and entertaining stories that remind us of our collective humanity.

POSITION DETAILS

The Second Carpenter is a permanent, full time seasonal position (mid-August – early April) This position is under the jurisdiction of IATSE Local 105 and reports to the Production Manager via the Head Scenic Carpenter.  The majority of work is performed at the Grand Theatre Scene Shop located off-site in East London, so access to a vehicle is an asset.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The safe and efficient construction of all scenic elements and furniture pieces in consultation with the Head Scenic Carpenter, Production Manager (PM) and Technical Director (TD).
  • Maintaining shop equipment and facilities to the extent of their abilities.
  • Supervising additional carpenters during stage load ins on projects specifically built by Second Carpenter.
  • Working closely with Scenic Art to coordinate scheduling of work on, and access to scenic elements throughout the build process.
  • Coordinating work on scenic elements with other departments, including but not limited to: Props, Wardrobe, Flies, Stage, Lighting, and Sound.

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Three or more years of professional work experience in a shop/theatre environment
  • Extensive knowledge of theatrical building practices in wood and metal, experience with flown scenery, strong knowledge of traditional materials and are excited about researching and using new ones.
  • Experience with basic automated stage machinery, and are interested in learning more.  Strong math and spatial reasoning skills are considered an asset.
  • A problem solver, creative thinker, great team player and a passion for theatre.
  • A fast builder, learner, and welcome a good challenge. 
  • First Aid, Working at Heights, and forklift certification considered an asset.
  • Ability to work in Vectorworks or AutoCad considered an asset. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

TIMING

Contract Dates:  August 16, 2021 – March 18, 2022

SALARY               

$28.45 per hour.  40 hours guaranteed per week.  Minimum guaranteed weeks - 28 weeks per year.
