The Sound of Music - Youth Auditions

The Grand Theatre operates on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) peoples and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we live, work and tell stories together.

Our Commitment

At the Grand we are committed to creating and practicing a company culture that ensures an accessible, equitable, inclusive, and welcoming space for artists, audiences, donors, board members, and staff. We actively encourage submissions from artists who self-identify as being part of underserved communities. It is our mission to reflect the diversity of our community on and off our stages. If you can imagine yourself in the role, then so can we!

Access and inclusion are important to us. If you have any questions regarding the Grand’s accessibility policies and initiatives, or any requests, we encourage you to reach out to Christine Gruenbauer, Company Manager, at cgruenbauer [at] grandtheatre.com (cgruenbauer[at]grandtheatre[dot]com)

The Project

The Sound of Music

Music by Richard Rodgers
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
Book by Howard Lindsay & Russel Crouse
Suggest by "The Trapp Family Singers" by Maria Augusta Trapp

Directed by: Rachel Peake
Music Directed by: Alexandra Kane
Choreographed by: Ainsley Hillyard

The abbey life is not the life for Maria: an exuberant, free-spirited, would-be nun with the habit of fleeing her studies to sing in the Austrian mountainside.

For a change of scenery, Maria is off to join the von Trapp family household as the latest in a long string of governesses for humourless naval captain Georg von Trapp and his seven disciplined but mischievous children. While the family is initially no match for Maria’s unstoppable love of music and whimsy, it isn’t long until the power of song brings much welcome harmony, romance, and the promise of a bright future, into their home.

But, against political unrest, the von Trapps’ newfound joy becomes threatened. Will the hills that offered Maria her musical solace also become the family’s road to refuge?

Grand Theatre Artistic Director Rachel Peake helms this 2024 holiday production, based on the Tony Award-winning musical, Academy Award-winning film, and featuring memorable classic songs: “My Favourite Things”, “Do-Re-Mi”, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”, “So Long, Farewell”, and “Something Good.”

Submitting for an Audition:

Parents/guardians: before submitting your young performer for an audition, please read the following:

We receive a lot of submissions! Because of the large volume of submissions we receive, we cannot guarantee an audition for all performers.

While we strive to ensure that the Grand Theatre auditions are a warm and rewarding experience for all artists, it must be understood that an audition or callback for a role is not a guarantee. Directors and creative team members (music director, choreographer, etc.) base their choices on many factors which may include height, ability to follow direction, or voice type.

Please submit a theatre resume and photo of your young performer for consideration through our form located here: https://forms.gle/2xcgR1RZyj5c81pN6 . Please only submit once.

I’ve never made a theatre resume before – what should be included?
For your young performer, please include their past stage experience or any other relevant performing experience. Please also include their date of birth, and height.

The deadline for submissions to be received is Friday, August 2 at 5:00 pm. Auditioners will be contacted by approximately August 16.
