Backstage Tours

See the historic Grand Theatre like you’ve never seen it before with a backstage tour. Get an inside look at what happens on and off the stage of the Spriet and Auburn theatres and what it takes to produce a show at the Grand.

Tour the Spriet Stage with its legendary proscenium arch, one of the last of its kind in Canada, step inside a dressing room, explore the costume and props shops. You’ll hear some of the best stories first-hand from your tour guides from the volunteers, staff members and artists who have worked at the Grand – and learn more about our resident ghost, Ambrose Small.

Tours are approximately 60 minutes in length and are held after matinee performance on select Sundays.

FAQ

How long are the tours?

Each tour lasts for approximately 60 minutes and will cover both the Spriet Stage and Auburn Stages

How big can a tour group be?

To ensure an engaging experience and to comfortably navigate the smaller spaces of our theatre, each tour group is limited to 15 participants. This also helps us maintain safety standards for everyone involved.

Can my child attend a tour?

Children aged 12+ may attend if accompanied by an adult. All attendees – including children – must have a prebooked ticket.

Do you book any day other than Sundays?

At this time select Sundays are our only designated tour days. Other options are not available due to the busy nature of our theatre.

Where do I go when I arrive for my tour?

You will meet the rest of the tour group in our Main Lobby where a volunteer tour guide will meet you and check your ticket.

What if I arrive late for my tour?

If you arrive within the first 15 minutes of your scheduled tour, you may join the group in progress. However, please be aware that doors will close 15 minutes after the tour begins, and latecomers will not be admitted. Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds for missed tours.

Are your tours accessible?

Tour participants will walk through the theatre, climb stairs and navigate narrow spaces.

  • Wheelchair/Walker: Currently, due to the heritage nature of our building, some areas are not fully accessible to wheelchairs. We are actively working on adjustments to improve accessibility and will offer more accessible tours in the near future.
  • Seating Options: While our tours do not provide designated seating, we can accommodate individuals who may need to take breaks during the tour. Please let your guide know if you require assistance.
  • Restrooms: Accessible restrooms are located in the lobby area, but please note that the tour itself may not lead directly to these facilities.
  • Hearing Accessibility: Our tour guides do not use microphones and may not always be facing the group while speaking. If you have hearing concerns, we recommend positioning yourself closer to the guide for better communication.
  • Cognitive Accessibility: Our guides are trained to provide engaging experiences, but if you or a companion need additional support during the tour, please feel free to communicate your needs to the guide.

For any accessibility inquiries or to discuss specific needs prior to your visit, please reach out to our Front of House team at foh [at] grandtheatre.com (foh[at]grandtheatre[dot]com). We encourage you to contact us in advance if you have specific requirements, so we can do our best to accommodate you.

We appreciate your understanding as we work to improve accessibility at the Grand Theatre. We look forward to welcoming you on our guided tour and appreciate your patience as we enhance our offerings for all visitors!
